ABOUT ERW PIPE

Electric Resistance Welded pipes (ERW pipes)  are manufactured by rolling steel strips into a tubular shape and then welding along the seam using electric resistance welding technology. Unlike seamless steel pipes, the welded seam of ERW pipes undergoes additional heat treatment and processing to enhance the pipe's strength and integrity. Due to their efficient production process, ERW pipes offer a wider range of dimensional specifications and are more cost-effective compared to seamless steel pipes. ERW pipes are available in various materials, including carbon steel, stainless steel, and alloy steel, allowing selection based on specific environmental and application requirements. Surface treatments such as galvanization or epoxy coating enhance corrosion resistance and extend service life in extreme conditions. Due to their excellent mechanical properties and high cost-effectiveness, ERW pipes are widely used in oil and gas transportation, water supply systems, structural applications, and other industrial sectors.

Carbon steel ERW pipes are primarily composed of iron-carbon alloys and do not contain other alloying elements. Based on carbon content, they can be classified into low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, and high-carbon steel. As carbon content increases, strength and hardness improve, but ductility and weldability decrease. Carbon steel electric resistance welded pipes offer excellent strength and toughness, capable of withstanding high pressure loads. They also exhibit good machinability and weldability, making them widely applicable. The disadvantage of carbon steel is its relatively poor corrosion resistance, making it susceptible to oxidation and corrosion in humid or extreme environments. Therefore, in certain extreme operating conditions, secondary treatments such as epoxy coating or hot-dip galvanizing are typically required to enhance durability. Due to its relatively low cost and reliable performance, carbon steel electric resistance welded pipes are extensively used in industries such as construction, machinery manufacturing, and oil and gas transportation.

Stainless steel ERW pipes are primarily made from carbon steel with the addition of chromium alloy elements to enhance their corrosion resistance and high-temperature resistance. The higher the chromium content, the stronger the corrosion resistance. This material has a smooth surface and excellent oxidation resistance, capable of withstanding corrosion from various chemical substances. It performs exceptionally well in extreme environments such as humid or corrosive soils, making it suitable for a wide range of high-demand applications, including chemical processing, food processing, pharmaceuticals, and marine engineering. It is particularly important in medical devices and the food industry. Although stainless steel electric resistance welded pipes have relatively high costs, their high durability and low maintenance costs make them an ideal choice for many specialized applications.

Alloy steel ERW pipes are manufactured by adding other alloy elements (such as chromium, nickel, molybdenum, tungsten, etc.) to an iron-carbon alloy base. Stainless steel is also a type of alloy steel. The primary characteristics of this material are its excellent strength, toughness, and wear resistance, enabling it to perform exceptionally well under high-temperature, high-pressure, corrosive, and extreme environmental conditions. Alloy steel electric resistance welded pipes are designed to meet specific application requirements and are commonly used in industries such as petroleum, natural gas, chemicals, aerospace, and nuclear energy. Alloy steel electric resistance welded pipes offer higher safety and reliability. Due to their unique composition and production process, alloy electric resistance welded pipes typically have higher costs. However, their long-term durability and performance advantages make them an indispensable material in many high-end applications.

ERW PIPE VS SAW PIPE

ERW (Electric Resistance Welded) and SAW (Submerged Arc Welded) are two fundamentally different welding processes. ERW pipes are produced without adding filler material, relying instead on the fusion of the base metal combined with pressure. SAW pipes, however, require the addition of filler wire and flux. The SAW process is primarily divided into two types: LSAW (Longitudinal Submerged Arc Welded) and SSAW (Spiral Submerged Arc Welded).LSAW pipes, manufactured from a single sheet of steel, exhibit superior comprehensive mechanical properties. In contrast, SSAW pipes offer greater flexibility in diameter and lower production costs, but feature longer weld lengths and relatively lower precision. ERW pipes are renowned for their high cost-effectiveness and production efficiency, primarily used in small-to-medium diameter and medium-to-low pressure applications.

We have two pipe product manufacturing bases in Yantai, Shandong Province. One of them, the General Pipe Manufacturing Base, has a history of nearly 70 years and is equipped with five hot-rolling production lines and one cold-drawing production line, with an annual production capacity of up to 500,000 tons.
